After 17 years working for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott playing an important part in their champions the likes of Pierro, Vancouver, Plus the rest of their Golden Slipper winners, Stephen also played a big part with the likes of champion mare More Joyous, English, the war horse in Desert War, Theseo, Northern Meteor & Fiorente the 2013 Melbourne Cup winner.

Stephen decide to take the next step of his career and become the private trainer for Paul Fudge and his renowned Waratah Thoroughbreds at the magnificent property Bong Bong Farm in the Southern Highlands. Stephen had his first winner within five months of training with Riot Act at Nowra. To prove that this was no fluke Riot Act then went on to win again two weeks later at Goulburn. This kicked off a string of winners for Stephen who went on to train ten more winners for Waratah Thoroughbreds including his first city winner, Prince of Arragon when he won at Warwick Farm. Some other memorable winners include Lost Impact, Stellar Performer and Himiko. In May 2021 Stephen moved to Hawkesbury Race Club to train in his own right. It didn't take long for the wins to start coming with Martini Crusader giving Stephen his first winner at Newcastle, followed by home track success of Superargo and Oceans One.
